Erotic art history (4) --- Italy, around 1530 AD

(From the pages of Erotic Art History:)

Today’s piece of historic erotic art comes to us from circa 1530-37 Italy and is a maiolica bowl by Francesco Urbini. (1)  Maiolica was a technique in which pottery was covered with a tin glaze that absorbed pigments in a manner similar to a fresco and created a white background which preserved vivid colors once they were applied.  In this scene, a woman’s head, neck, and shoulders are comically almost completely comprised of boners, included one that is pierced through the head to represent a pierced ear.  Behind her is a banner which translates into “every man looks at me as if I were a head of dicks“.   (1)
(This piece is on display at the Ashmolean Museum of Art and Archaeology at the University of Oxford.)
