New in the gallery -- Musk Ming

Musk Ming

(From the artist's website:)

Musk Ming is a Berlin-based Chinese artist who has carved out his own way of combining traditional Chinese art with contemporary techniques and Western aesthetics. His works, which have been showcased across Europe and Asia, often reflect an international outlook and cross-cultural perspective.
"Musk Ming" is a pseudonym. “Musk” ("shè xiāng" in Chinese) is a class of aromatic substance often used in perfumery and Chinese medicine. "Ming" is the artist’s birth name, which translates as “brightness” or “clarity” in Chinese.
In 2005, Musk Ming moved to Berlin, a city of unique atmosphere of freedom and sexual tolerance. He felt truly liberated and decided to follow his artistic impulse. The absence of sexuality in Chinese art and the relatively open approach in the West are brought to the fore in his paintings. Beyond the nudity, however, the focus is always on the relationship between human, society and nature. A case in point is the subversive Maoist series, which propagates the idea of a "sexually enlightened chapter", taking humans back to the natural order of things.
In the run-up to the Beijing Olympics in 2008, Musk Ming’s painting Go West, which portrays a group of athletes, was selected for the official Olympic Fine Arts exhibition. But shortly before the show’s opening, the painting was removed by the Chinese authorityon grounds of "unsuitability" of the content.
Over the past decade, Musk Ming has been painting with passion and zest. His works have been exhibited in galleries in Berlin, Cologne, Lodon, Utrecht, Amsterdam, Mallorca, Essen,Groingen, Antwerp, Los Angeles, Amsterdam, Beijing and Bangkok. Some of his paintings are held as private collections in Europe, North America, Australia, South Africa and Asia.
To further connect himself to the vibrant art scene of Berlin, he opened an art gallery from 2010 to 2014. Located in the heart of Nollendorfplatz, Berlin Avantgarde was an eventful place that provides a platform for budding and established artists to showcase their works.
Since 2013, Musk Ming started to work with the Berlin independent music label LightGeist records as a singer-songwriter and released several singles and albums in English, Chinese and German. Two of His music videos have been officially selected for the Berlin Music Video Awards 2015 and 2016, Musk Ming had a live tour to seven cities of China in the summer of 2016.
